Hokusai signed his late work as Gakyo Rojin — "the old man mad about painting." He changed his artist name more than thirty times, always searching. His Great Wave is the most recognized image in Japanese art history, yet it represents only a fraction of a life spent pushing the boundaries of what a woodblock print could hold.
